Taking Ozempic, Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Here’s How to Prevent Muscle Loss and Protect Your Metabolism

The buzz around GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound is everywhere.

These drugs can feel like a breakthrough and they have helped many people get healthier by shedding the burden of extra pounds that have been weighing their organism down for too many years. This obesity burden can literally lead to death so getting it under control is imperative for a healthy and full life!

GLP-1 drugs can be immediately appealing and motivating when first taking them: Appetite drops quickly, the scale finally moves in the right direction, and it can feel like progress is finally happening. But here’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: losing weight is not the same thing as improving your metabolism.

Part of how they work is by mimicking a hormone that slows stomach emptying, signals fullness, and lowers blood sugar. That’s great for eating less and feeling full, but it doesn’t directly build the things that actually increase your metabolism and make it more resilient. Muscles are what drive metabolic health, and when your body loses weight quickly, whether from drugs or extreme calorie cutting, it almost always loses lean mass too.

These medications were originally developed to help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. They were later approved to help with chronic weight management. That means they are intended to be part of long-term treatment, meant to be taken indefinitely rather than as a short-term fix.

Most people don’t actually stay on them long-term. Many discontinue them within a year, often due to cost, side effects, or because they thought they were done with their weight loss and could maintain the results on their own. I bet you can guess what might be coming next…

When they stop the medication, appetite usually returns and much of the lost weight tends to come back, unless lifestyle habits have changed. That’s simply how the body responds when a strong appetite-suppressing signal or significant caloric deficit is removed.

Research is still emerging, but early findings and clinical observations show that a a large portion of the weight lost on these meds comes from muscle, not just fat. Some studies have found that up to roughly 15–25% of the weight loss can be lean mass, and clinical reports indicate that up to about 39% of total weight loss is lean body mass rather than fat. That means almost half of what comes off could be muscle if you’re not protecting it.  This means that using these weight loss drugs not only does not protect your metabolism, it tanks it.

Muscles are your calorie burning engines, collectively they make up the engine of your metabolism. Muscles maintain resting metabolic rate, help regulate blood sugar, support strong bones and joints, provide mobility and keep you feeling confident and strong in daily life.

Build muscle and your metabolism increases, which means you require more calories to maintain your organism. Lose muscle, and your metabolism doesn’t just slow down and require less calories,  you also lose strength, balance, resilience, and many other long-term health benefits. And because GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, naturally encouraging lower calorie intake, you’re essentially training your body to operate on less energy, which can further encourage your organism to store fat and shed muscle. The organism will shed muscle over fat to conserve energy as muscle is very expensive metabolic tissue.

Here’s the bottom line: GLP-1 medications can help initiate weight loss creating motivation and initial health improvements, but they don’t build muscle and they don’t protect your metabolism on their own. If you simply rely on medication with no structured strength stimulus or nutrition strategy, you can lose a lot of the wrong kind of weight, leaving you weaker and with a lower metabolic baseline once the medication is stopped. That’s the opposite outcome of what we would want long term for our health.

25-minute strength training sessions

Want to set up your own workout routine in the gym? We’ll help you train on your own to get results, to save time, and to stay injury-free.  Get started with all you need to know to apply our High Intensity SAFE Strength Training® in your own gym and on your own time.

That’s where strength training comes in. At Rock Solid Fitness, we don’t chase weight loss, we chase fat loss while preserving precious muscle and strength. A strength training program does not need to be daily and for hours at a time either.

Our workouts are 25 minutes long, intelligently designed, and focused on progressive overload, which means your muscles are challenged to adapt and grow stronger over time. This duration and frequency has been scientifically proven to yield the best possible results with the least amount of stress to the organism.

Strength training helps protect or even build muscle while you lose fat, keeping your metabolic engine running strong. We use tools like InBody scans to measure not just how much weight you lose, but how your body composition changes – what is the muscle to fat ratio.

Nutrition and calories matter too, especially protein, because your body needs the building blocks to preserve muscle as you lose weight. And when strength training and smart nutrition are paired with any weight-loss strategy, including GLP-1 medications, you’re doing the metabolic work that pills alone cannot do, building calorie burning muscles.

So if you’re using a GLP-1 medication now or considering one, know this: these drugs can be a tool, but they aren’t a standalone strategy. They won’t replace the metabolic health and resilience gained through building muscle, so incorporate a strength training program. Focusing only on the scale is only telling part of the story of what’s really happening inside your body. Strength training protects you from the hidden cost of muscle loss, preserves your bones and metabolism, and keeps you feeling powerful, not just smaller.

You deserve a plan that honors your long-term health, not a short-term number on the scale. Strength training isn’t optional if metabolism and long term health matters, it’s essential. And if you want support doing it the right way, we’re here to help you stay Rock Solid every step of the way. Make an appointment and come learn with us.
