How to get rid of belly fat: 5 simple tricks
Between the recent holidays and the restrictions of Covid 19 we have all been dealing with, keeping our belly fat from increasing has been a huge challenge lately. But there are more serious consequences to accumulating belly fat than just not liking how we look.
As Rock Solid Fitness CEO Patty Durell recently explained on Great Day Live Tampa Bay to host Java Ingram and the TV audience, belly fat is also know as visceral fat, and too much of it has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
So with these serious health problems in mind, we need to figure out how to get rid of belly fat. In the TV segment (SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE VIDEO OF THE SHOW), Patty touched on 5 simple tricks we can employ:
1. Figure out if you have too much belly fat.
As Patty explains in the video below, the most accurate method of determining how much belly fat you have is with an expensive diagnostic test, like a dexascan, CT scan, or MRI. However the methods are costly and impractical for most people.
At Rock Solid Fitness, we use an InBody 570 scanning device to measure belly fat (and many other things), which correlates to a dexascan with 94% accuracy.
The simplest way to get an idea of your belly fat level is with a tape measure. Put the tape around your waist (no pulling it super tight!), and a measurement of over 35 inches for women and over 40 inches for men indicates too much belly fat.
2. The best exercise to get rid of belly fat
As Patty and Java hilariously talk about in the video, the exercise is pushing yourself away from the table!
3. Replace foods high in refined sugar
Try to substitute natural foods high in fiber, which will fill you up more and keep you full longer, not to mention fiber is good for your health. And many of the high fiber foods Patty recommends in the video are sweet too, like raspberries and apples.
4. Decrease alcohol consumption
Java mentions in the video going for a “dry January”, to get back on track with low alcohol consumption to counteract the holidays.
5. Get on a consistent strength training program
Properly performed strength training will not only help you function better and be more resistant to injury, it helps keep belly fat in check by not only burning calories during the workout, but also providing a calorie “after-burn” for hours after the workout – much more so than cardio. And adding muscle tissue to your body increases your metabolism so you burn more calories on a day-in, day-out basis.
