You Can’t Out Train A Poor Diet

Women Trying To Out Train A Poor Diet

43 Almonds: What Your Cardio Session Really Buys You

I hear this almost every week at Rock Solid Fitness. Someone hits a plateau, gets frustrated with the scale, and tells me they need to start incorporating cardio. The treadmill? Elliptical? As if the answer to fat loss is simply do cardio, do more.  The only problem with that is, you can’t out train a poor diet.

So let’s talk about the math for a minute, because I want you to actually see it instead of just feeling frustrated by it.

A thirty minute session of average cardio activity burns somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 calories. That number moves a bit depending on your weight and your intensity, but it is a fair average for most people.

Now here is the part that gets people’s attention when I explain it to them, maybe it will get yours too. One almond is about 7 calories, which means that thirty minutes of cardio, the kind that leaves you a little out of breath and checking the clock, buys you back roughly forty three almonds. Not a bowl. Not a trail mix bag. A handful of almonds, and your cardio calories are spent.

I am not telling you this because I don’t believe in cardio, or movement in general. Movement is good for your body in ways that have nothing to do with the scale. But if the goal is fat loss, and you are hoping that more time on a machine is going to out muscle what you are eating, the science is not on your side.

This is what most people don’t understand. Strength training builds the muscle, the metabolic engine, the strength and energy that make everything else in life easier. Cardio activity lowers disease risk, boosts your mood, and helps prevent heart disease. Both matter, and I will never talk anyone out of either one.

Guide to strength training nutrition

Even with the perfect workout routine, your results are determined by your habits outside of the gym.  The 4 keys to optimal health are to train right, eat right, rest right, and manage your stress right.  It takes a balance of all 4 to get your optimal health.  If you are working out, but don’t have the results you are striving for, you may just need to tweak your habits outside of the gym.  We have a series of tips to help you get on track with your goals without overcomplicating things.

But neither one erases what happens in your kitchen and at the dinner table. The math works against you, not because it’s impossible, but because it would cost you half your day, every day, to make it happen.  That math is why you can’t out train a poor diet.  Simply put, nobody has the time.

Fat loss comes down to calories in and calories out. That is the whole equation underneath every fad, every supplement, every trending workout. And you cannot manage what you do not measure.

If you do not know roughly how many calories you are eating, you have no way to know whether you are actually consuming what your body needs for the desired result, no matter how hard you are working out.

Track what you actually eat, without judgment, long enough to see the real numbers instead of the numbers you assume. This does not mean you have to obsess over every bite for the rest of your life. This is a chance to see the truth instead of guessing at it. Do it for five days and include the weekend. Most people are shocked by what they learn, not because they lack discipline, but because a handful here and a little more there add up faster than anyone expects.

If you have been adding more cardio hoping it will finally move the scale, I would ask you to redirect that same effort toward what you put in your mouth instead. You already have the discipline. You are already showing up. Save yourself the time in the gym by stopping yourself from the mindless eating of extra calories.  Give your kitchen the same honest attention you give the gym, and I think you will finally see the results you have been working so hard for.
